How much do you think a parent should be involved in their child’s attempt to lose weight?
Cookie Diet Tips November 12th, 2009I’m trying to lose weight. Don’t say I’m young, and growing, because I am overweight and I need to lose it. I’ve lost fifteen pounds already, and now I can’t lose anymore. The problem is the stuff we have in the house. We buy cookies and other unhealthy snacks, we constantly have soda in the house, we order take-out, and we also order pizza a lot. I ask my mom a lot if we can maybe not order out as much and especially stop buying soda. I’m not even asking her to cook, I’m capable of making a meal for myself if she were just to buy healthier ingredients. When I say things like this, though, she says "because I’m trying to lose weight, no one in the house can have pizza?" or cookies or whatever it is I asked her about (because I have two siblings who are "healthy"), as if I’m being selfish for wanting to eat healthier…
I don’t have a problem resisting temptation in the store, I can look at soda, and cookies and cake and without a second glance. The problem is when it’s in the house, and it’s just there. And it always is. That makes it a lot harder.
Is it really selfish of me to expect my mother to buy healthier foods? Isn’t it her that’s supposed to be encouraging me to eat healthier?
It’s just all really frustrating.
As far as this relating to diet and fitness, I guess what I’m asking for are tips on self-control when there a lot of unhealthy foods in the house.

I think your family should be able to eat pizza if they want, but I think your mom should buy something healthier for you if she can. Try this: Say something like, "Mom, I want to lose weight, and I hope I can count on your support. I know you and the others like soda and pizza, and it’s fine with me if you have that. But I would like to have something else, if possible. Some salads, fresh fruit and vegetables, and lean protein would be great. And if you like, I will help cook enough to feed the others if they want to eat what I eat".
A couple of other ideas and suggestions:
look up recipes on places like cookinglight.com to find things you can fix. Look for things that the family might like, too.
When you cook things like chicken, etc, if the others eat something else, make enough of your foods for 2 meals. That way, you have something healthy that you can grab quickly, rather than having only pizza and such on hand when you are hungry and easily tempted.
There are plastic bags made for steaming vegetables that are a great way to cook veggies in a microwave. It takes 2-3 minutes to do one serving, and 3-4 for more. Again - make enough for 2-3 meals, so you can grab something tomorrow if you like, to help avoid temptation.
Keep fresh fruit on hand, and grab that for snacks.
Drink LOTS of water - like at least 2 quarts a day. If you feel like you have to go pee every time you turn around, you’re probably getting enough water.
