How much do you think a parent should be involved in their child’s attempt to lose weight?
Cookie Diet November 9th, 2009I’m trying to lose weight. Don’t say I’m young, and growing, because I am overweight and I need to lose it. I’ve lost fifteen pounds already, and now I can’t lose anymore. The problem is the stuff we have in the house. We buy cookies and other unhealthy snacks, we constantly have soda in the house, we order take-out, and we also order pizza a lot. I ask my mom a lot if we can maybe not order out as much and especially stop buying soda. I’m not even asking her to cook, I’m capable of making a meal for myself if she were just to buy healthier ingredients. When I say things like this, though, she says "because I’m trying to lose weight, no one in the house can have pizza?" or cookies or whatever it is I asked her about (because I have two siblings who are "healthy"), as if I’m being selfish for wanting to eat healthier…
I don’t have a problem resisting temptation in the store, I can look at soda, and cookies and cake and without a second glance. The problem is when it’s in the house, and it’s just there. And it always is. That makes it a lot harder.
Is it really selfish of me to expect my mother to buy healthier foods? Isn’t it her that’s supposed to be encouraging me to eat healthier?
It’s just all really frustrating.
Thank you for visiting our Cookie Diet website today. We hope you join the program and start losing weight.
They should be behind you. I think it’s a parent responsibility to follow their children’s diets very closely. 1/ to help them resist temptations and make healthy choices and 2/ in case they take the diet too far.
It wouldn’t hurt your siblings either to eat healthy. They don’t need to be on a diet as well and should be allowed treats once in a while that you aren’t, but they should be happy to help you out by having chicken and green beans for example (which is a delicious meal anyway so it’s not like they’re eating tofu either). As for sodas, why don’t you switch to diet coke and all? It tastes good as well and when you get used to it you just can’t stand the sugar in the normal coke anymore (My mom made us switch when we were kids and I now absolutely hate normal coke because the taste is way too sweet! That way you could still drink sodas without ruining your diet.
It doesn’t seem to me that your family is going to change their habits and comfort to help you though. So you are going to have to toughen up and I’m truly sorry for you. Be brave and keep on the right path. It will be so rewarding for you when you get healthy again!
